Avmax Issues Two New Transport Canada STCs Supporting Upcoming Canadian Mandate for Ten Minute RIPS

Avmax Aviation Services Inc (Avmax) is pleased to announce the issuance of two new Transport Canada Supplemental Type Certificates (STC) in support of the upcoming Canadian mandate for Cockpit Voice Recorders (CVR) to have a 10-minute Recorder Independent Power Supply (RIPS) which comes into force in May 2023.

Avmax in conjunction with Universal Avionics (Universal) has developed STC SA22-48 for installing the KaptureTM CVR on Commuter category aircraft, currently including the King Air B200GT, B200CGT, 300, 300LW, B300 and B300C series aircraft.  Within the next two week the 1900C and 1900D series aircraft will be added and in the fall the Citation CJ3 and Viking DHC-6 will be added to this approval.  This STC can be used to replace an existing CVR or install a complete CVR system in aircraft not currently equipped with a CVR.

The second STC developed by Avmax is SA22-29 for installing the Kapture CVR on Transport category aircraft, currently including the de Havilland DHC-8-100/200/300 series aircraft.  In the fall adding the DHC-8-400 series aircraft is planned along with several other aircraft types.

After looking at various CVR options Avmax chose to develop STC approvals for the Universal 5th generation Kapture CVR because of its many operator friendly features including using non-battery technology to meet the RIPS requirements so there is no expensive battery maintenance or replacement required, 25-hour recording capacity and non-lithium battery 90-day Underwater Locator Device (ULD).

Additionally, Avmax offers an optional download harness which, along with software from Universal, allows downloading of CVR data in the field.  This means that instead of shipping the CVR out for the annual intelligibility check the data can be downloaded and sent our Transport Canada authorized CVR service shop.  This saves both money and time on an annual basis for operators.

As a Transport Canada & Transportation Safety Board approved CVR download and evaluation company, Avmax can support CVR analysis requirements for initial CVR installations as well as annual and out-of-phase analysis requirements.

If you don’t see your aircraft type listed for either of these STC’s please contact us at sales@avmax.com to see how Avmax can help you meet the RIPS requirement.
